On the beautiful Garden Isle of Kauai, the historic plantation town of Waimea nestles at the mouth of Waimea Canyon, often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It was here that ancient Hawaiian kings lived and greeted Captain James Cook on his 1778 "discovery" of the Hawaiian Islands. Kaumuali'i, the last King of Kauai, initiated the exotic sandalwood trade with China and welcomed the first American missionaries to Waimea. Over the years, sugar cane replaced taro as the chief agricultural crop and, in 1884, Waimea Sugar Mill Company was established.
